Open World Sandbox MMO

This game will Be completely different from any other MMO I've played, in the sense that once you login you realize the whole world does not evolve around you, but you still have the feeling you can change quite a bit of it. This game will run off the same type of Engine of the Open world sandbox game described below, but with differences in the way the city is arranged.

City - Instead of being built like a city it's built more like a Series of bases. The Center being where everyone starts off. They get their own house or apartment, They get a job and start building up cash. From here they can start choosing different areas of the map. Each Section of the map is controlled by a gang. Choosing which gang you join will decide which people are your allies and enemies in the other cities. From beginning you start doing missions based on the type of character class you want to be. If you want to be an assassin you'll get missions that involve stealth. The further into the city you get the better protected you are if a gang decides to try taking over the different sections of your city. If a section is taken over you can't live there anymore and will have to find a new place to live in your gang terrorty. Each city also has a protected section that can not be taken over unless the Don is killed. Once all the dons are killed the Server resets and the city is set back to square one.

Job Types - Assassin involves stealth and killing of political and finanically benifical characters inside the main city. They will gain new style of weapons that involve silenced pistols, Knifes and even a kitana. Low on armor means if they get attacked head on they will need to run away. Theft involves stealing and bribery in order to help the gang gain power without blood shed. They still will have mastery in deadly weapons like the knife or hand gun but they will mostly get away with car theft. If someone needs a car stolen for a bank job, they will put out a mission for a theft. Gunman is the master of guns. He's built to wear armor and use all Medium weapons including SMGs, Rifles, Shotguns and machettes. Their missions involve more brute force, like knocking over a bank inside another gang's terrority to decrease bankroll to their gang members. The last class is called the Bruiser. He's built for heavy artillery and is more prone to be arrested if caught. Guns include pipe bombs, C4, Sniper rifles, Rocket launchers, gernade launchers and turrets. Their place in the gangs will be breaking into the vaults, Setting the explosives on buildings and taking out any police involvment.

Missions - This is were the game really shines. The big part of the mission structure is player made missions. If a group of friends all work as assassins and gunmans decide they want to take out a bank, they will need to take it to the don, ask for a certain ammount of dollars, depending on the plans (Intelligence level of the assassine) and the ranking of the players the don will give a certain ammount of dollars for hiring and mission complete. Hiring dollars can Only be used for placing job notices on a gang handout or in the paper. If a theft notices in the paper that a certain group wants a certain style of car. They can send a phone call to the number in the add, get a confirmation and then that becomes their active mission. They set out and need to steal a car, without being caught and get it back to were ever the Don's mansion is. If the car is untraced the mission is complete and his part of the job is paid. Then the group collects the car, Sets up a time with a Bruiser or two and sets out on their mission. Once at the scene they will need to be effective, kill all the guards, blow up the vault and get the money back to a safe house without the cops catching them.

The Paper - This is where Most of the missions and recent events will be highlighted. The newest bank robberys or failed attempts will be shown off and everyone will get one in at their door in the morning of each day. Since the time is set in real time they won't need to worry about being late for a certain mission, because they can just look on their watch and set it according to real time. People will look through the paper in the help wanted adds, Sports and health to see hidden missions. The police will also look through the paper for obvious clues to bank robberys, murder attemps and gang activity. Which is why it's important not to put times or find a way of encoding it to make it harder.

The Police - This will be the biggest improvement to the MMO. Player Controled police force. Players will patrol the streets, arrest criminals and beat down gang opertives. Job types will include Officer, Detective and Swat. Each one involve more time at training camp and better skills all around. Higher Up detectives can take bribes from gang players to ignore Crimes or arrest the wrong people. Swat will be used to bring down bank robbery attemps or suicidal maniacs who rain havok on the city. If arrested the player is taken to a jail cell and held for 3 hours. After that they Lose a small percentage of their skill points and Health for a while. There are no deaths, just arrests or being taken to the hospital to recover and lose money. Officers are restricted to a certain set of rules. The option to arrest does not come up till they see them perform something illegal. If they walk next to a car and use the examine button to look through the window to see a bag of drugs they can then use the option to examine the car and arrest the owner. They can also Hire detectives inside the police force to track vehicals and car thefts.

Open World Sandbox part 1

I've decided to split this up into two parts. Part 1 will be the offline and part 2 will be the online. They will be drastically different from each other while keeping the same city and design the same.

Story - The character is set up inside a jail cell. His room mate lays in a pool of his own blood on the ground next to him. The guard opens the door and the Character steps over the dead cell mate and walks out into the hall. Being lead down the hall you see the faces of all the other people in jail just staring at the player not saying a word. He's lead into a room were they give him clothes and items. They then lead him outside the jail and past the gates into the parking lot were it seems he's been let free. Walking towards a park taxi the character stops for a second, looks at the driver and frowns. The sound of the tires as the taxi drives away quickly leaving the newly released character standing there confused. Suddenly a black car turns the corner and all the windows roll down. Realizing what happens the character trys to run but the gunfire catchs him in the back and he drops. Leaving him for dead the car drives away.

Six weeks later the character wakes up in a hospital bed still covered in bloody bandages. Cops roam the hallway infront of his room as he tries to collect himself. Realizing he's not safe and not remembering who he is the character plans his escape and falls back asleep. Waking up at night he notices the cop has dissapeared. Looking into the empty hallway he notices something isn't right. As he wonders the halls he finds a few sets of cloths. Choosing which one he wants he then notices a body laying in one of the rooms. It's the officer that was guarding his room. Grabbing the gun out of his holster the character readies for the tutoral of the game. After he's out of the hospital he find himself still healing and without money or the memories of who he is. This is were the player gets to choose the name for the player.

Gameplay - The first instances of gameplay is the tutoral which starts after the character retreives the gun from the dead cop. The player is moved foward and back, along with straife with the right joy stick, then aims using the right. Right trigger pulls the trigger, Left brings the aim up for precision shots. The first series of tutoral is movement along with learning to hide behind objects like tables and chairs from Enemies that are looking through the level. The gun is locked so the AI is reset everytime you get caught. Once you've learned to stealthy move through the level to the second floor you realize sneaking out of the hospital will be impossible. The gun is now unlocked and is removed from the players holster. There are a few ways through this level, gun's blazing or just stealthy removing each character after nother. Guns blazing will alarm all the enemies and will bring hell on the player. Stealthly will limit the ammount of enemies on the level. The AI will notice flaws in the players movement if he moves around too fast. Since this is the first time out of his coma he's still walking with a limp. The enemies will start to target that spot and his health will decrease drastically faster. Other weapons other than the hand gun will be available but their effectivness will not drastically decreased due to the players inexperience. Melee weapons will be available including bats, chairs, hammers and lamps.

Environment - The world the player starts off in will be huge but nearly impossible to visit all at once. The first thing the player must do is find a place to live, which will be the first several blocks of the game with the lowest rent. As he gains money he can rent pricier places and move through the environment. The player can Steal a car, but if he doesn't have money for gas then he'll be stuck on the other side of the city with a warrant out for his head and no way to run. Each district will have their distinct feel with several dozen enclosed communties that will feed the player missions later on. The big thing that sets this city different from any other open world game is Seasons will have a massive impact on the world. Snow will fall randomly and accumulate on the ground causing harsh driving conditions. Random snow and water fall will make gaming experiences different for everyone, some people will see so much snow that their cars won't be able to drive and will be limited to snow gear and winter vehicals, while too much water fall will cause floods and make boating vehicals accessable in city.

Character - The character is a Blank slate. You start off as this low life with no money and a crappy apartment who doesn't remember anything past a couple days. Gathering your life you find a part time job at one of three resturants. Each will give you a salary along with feed you with some mini missions for extra cash. Once the local gangs hear you're willing to do shady work they will provide further missions that help flesh out the world around you. Giving you money to buy bigger places, get better clothes, buy better cars and afford gas to explore the entire map. Enclosed communties will be impossible to join unless you beat the missions given by each one. This includes jealous women who want you to vandalize the neighboring communties or sabatose local events. One mission in paticular has you running around the neighbour hood at night placing pink flamingos on several lawns causing the local community rep to go crazy. Eventually you start to remember the day you were shot and sent to the hospital. After finding the group responsible the storyline missions start leading you through the crime belly of the city to evenutally make your way to the crime lords. In the end you meet the man who sent you to jail in the first place. The man responsible for having you arrested then taking your place as a Crime lord. Realizing you're acutally one of the most feared men in the city there's several paths you can take. Kill the crime lord and rule over the city, leave him be and live your life as a petty theft or create a new crime syndication that will wage war against him.

Vehicals - The Driving will be a mix between arcade GTA style to realistic GT style. You can either look from inside the vehical and follow all the laws or look from outside and break the laws which could lead to tickets. Driving will changed by weather like snow or ice. Vehicals will be varied from Cars to Trucks, Motorcycles to 4 wheelers, Snow mobiles to Jet skis and boats. In order to keep the police off your trail you can purchase cars from shops and they will appear at your place of residence.

Game Design 1

This will be my first Game design blog. I'm writing them here because honestly when ever I try to tell people about it I always get interupted and can never finish. It's an Xbox Live Arcade Game.
Type: Turn based Strategy
Players: 1-4

Base: The game starts out with a Hero customizer. The player is given a blank template and outfits their character from thousands of choices of heads, hair, beards, masks, body types, customes and the like then distribute points according to what they want.
Main Character: The point of this customizer is to allow each person to have their own player thats an individual and represents their characters in the game. With all the choices no two characters should be alike. The customizer is Only offered to the main character, all other characters are restricted to their character types in order to support individuality.

Game start: Once the character is customized they awake inside a danky apartment with nothing but their bed. This apartment serves as a home base between fights. Here he can go outside to what looks like a new york street filled with venders for items and a recruitment office.

Recruitment office: Here is were alot of time will be spent. At the start the character can choose between 1-50 character types. Anywhere from Archeres to mages to Warriors to bikers to gun weilding psycos. They can name each character and adjust stats but base stats and weapons are limited to that type of character. This gives the player smaller window to mess up and create a weak team from the begining and allow those players who want to build an army to later on. In the end there will be around 250 character types each one that looks significally different from the other. They will be split between the good and the evil sides.

Venders: Here you will outfit your main character with armor weapons items and such to help you through a battle. The Main character can use Any weapon in the game without losing any type of damage rating. He is not limited to any character type so any armor is accessable too. The army he builds will be limited to their weapon and armor types. You can't equip a Samurai with steel plate heavy armor. Other than the main character the armor is purely stat's driven. Only on the main character does it change their appearance to further drive the customizing. The down side is armor will have no impact on the hero's stats.

Battle: Once everything is figured out and the Hero's army is assembled he will enter a lobby for battle purposes. Here a level will be randomly created with different terrans and stretegic points. He will also be partnered with who ever challenges him or with someone who's equal to his level. Each player will take a side. If it's 4 players it will be each side of the square. The player will have his hero out front and his army stationed behind him in a pattern he would choose from the Recruitment office. A dice would appear to show who goes first. From this view it looks alot like older style stretagy games like Tatics orge and FF Tacits. You move one character at a time, once that character is moved and his action is choosen the next player gets to move his character. This is to speed up the matchs and reduce the ammount of waiting each player has between turns. Once a player attacks another the ammount of damage he does is dependant on his strength - the defense of the other player + points depending on height and placing. If you're higher than him you get a +3 to damage, if you're behind him you get a +5 to damage. Once a enemy is knocked down they become unconious and can not be revived. On the next turn if your hero gets to the downed player he can send him back to the base. If he can't the next turn of the enemy can cause alot of trouble. This is were the Good and Evil system kicks in. On the next turn the enemy can either leave the dead body lie or he can finish him off. More details on that in the good vs evil section. Once all the characters of the enemy is defeated the round ends and the prize money is awarded. The main characters levels up depending on how his team did and they go back to the main base.

Good Vs Evil: This is were the game will shine. After a enemy is knocked down you can either leave them there or you can kill them. It takes a complete turn and for every kill gives you an evil point. If you leave them there you get 1 good point for every downed body at the end. The good points unlock a certain branch of new characters in the recuritment office while the evil unlocks the evil side. Once a character is killed on the screen they will no longer be avalible. The items they were carrying will be returned to the main character so that they can outfit a replacement. Good characters will have a significally different skill set and outlook than the Evil characters, although it has no big impact on the Main characters apearance other than unlocking new armor, items and equipment for each side.

Army: The main character will only have access to 6 characters on the battlefield but back in the base he can hold as many soldiers as he wants. He will specify which characters he wants to bring out and in what form they will take at the recruitment office. These characters stats can only be increased through Equipment and potions.

Base: The first base will be a apartment in a big city. With money made in the game you can buy different bases like a house in the suburbs, a Small shack on an island, a castle and so on. These are offline bases and can be outfited with items like couchs and stuff won randomly in battle. Each base as a limit on how many soldiers you can employ into your army with the castle having an unlimited ammount.

Hero: This is the character that will be associated with each player. This person will be able to level up to any range and will be an individual among his enemies. During battle if the Hero dies the match continues but the odds of winning drastically decrease. The hero's team that loses their hero will lose any intelligence boost they gain from having the hero on the board and will be more prone to confusion attacks. The only way to win a match is to get rid of all the people.

Betting: At the beginning of every match the player will be allowed to bet on the match. The bet must be matched by the other player before the match can start. After the match is over the money is split up between first, second, third place. Forth or second place for 2 player matchs don't receive any prize money other than money found on the ground or in chests around the map.
